Laser Hair Removal Precautions

February 20th, 2012

Laser hair removal treatment addresses many aesthetic problems, especially for women. It provides another way – a less painful one – to get rid of unwanted hair in your body. Women can now easily wear tank tops, bikinis and shorts without having to worry about the challenges of waxing or the consequences of shaving. Men who are excessively hairy are also thankful for this treatment. It was an outrageously expensive cosmetic procedure not too long ago. But these days, since there are many clinics and aesthetic centers that offer it, it has become quite an affordable option for many.

When removing body hair using laser treatment, the heat from the light damages the hair follicle and slows down hair growth. You’ll be recommended to undergo several treatment sessions, usually with a gap of 6 to 8 weeks from the previous session. It is almost impossible to achieve permanent removal of all unwanted hair, but the several treatments tremendously slow down new hair growth. But before you undergo any laser hair removal, you need to know all the important information and precautions. Following them will help prevent any disappointments and complications after the procedure.

You need to understand that this laser treatment works best on patients who have dark hair and light skin. If you’ve got light-colored hair, it may be difficult for the laser to zero in on the minimal amount of pigment in your hair follicles. Many doctors even recommend using sunscreen for at least 4 weeks before your scheduled treatment. Avoid getting a tan since this will increase your skin pigment, which will then be harder for the laser to distinguish from the hair pigment.

Waxing or plucking the hair in the area that will be treated should also be avoided a month before the treatment. Only shaving and trimming are allowed. Using a depilatory cream can also be permitted, but not when it’s already too close to the scheduled procedure. Among the possible risks of this treatment is darkening of the skin. In some people, it can cause the skin to lighten. Usually, though, it would only be temporary. Blistering and scarring may happen right after the procedure, but they should be gone in a few days.

While there are spas that offer laser hair removal, it would still be best to go to a doctor for consultation. This is to make sure that you really are a good candidate for the treatment. Going to a medical professional will also lessen or even completely eliminate any complication.
